How do I connect a VFD to a PLC?
Typically, there are three ways to connect PLC with VFD (variable frequency drive).
1. PLC analog output module controls VFD.
The analog output module of PLC outputs 0~10V voltage signal or 4~20mA current signal as the analog input signal of VFD to control the output frequency of VFD. Such a control method is simple to wire. However, users need to opt for the PLC output module that matches the input impedance of VFD, and the PLC analog output module is more expensive. In addition, it is necessary to take voltage-dividing measures to make the VFD adapt to the voltage signal range of PLC and to separate the wiring when connecting so that the noise on the side of the main circuit is not transmitted to the control circuit.
2. PLC switching output controls VFD.
The switching output of PLC can generally be directly connected with the switching input of VFD. This control method features relatively simple wiring and strong anti-interference ability. Additionally, this way can control the VFD start/stop, forward/reverse, pointing, speed, acceleration/deceleration time, etc., which can achieve more complex control requirements. Nevertheless, it can only access the step speed regulation.
3. Connection of PLC and RS485 communication interface.
Standard VFDs have an RS485 serial interface (some VFDs also provide an RS232 interface) with a two-wire connection. PLC can be connected with the VFD RS485 interface to control VFD.
