KNOWLEDGE BASE

Why does the VFD voltage change in proportion to the frequency?

The torque of an asynchronous motor is produced by the interaction between the magnetic flux of the motor and the current flowing in the rotor. Under the rated frequency, if the voltage is constant and the frequency is only reduced, then the magnetic flux will be too large and the magnetic circuit will be saturated, which will lead the motor to be burned. Therefore, the frequency and voltage should be varied proportionally. In other words, the variable frequency drive is controlled to output voltage while the frequency changes, so that the magnetic flux of AC motor keeps constant and the phenomenon of magnetic field weakening and magnetic saturation will not happen. Such VFD is more suitable for fans and pumps for motor speed control to save energy.
