KNOWLEDGE BASE --- The Different Components of a Wind Turbine (Ⅰ)
There are many components in wind turbines, some of which are visible on the outside, while some are hidden in the turbine nacelle (in the casing).
Visible components of a wind turbine
1. Wind Turbine Tower
One of the most important components of a wind turbine is its tall tower. A tower wind turbine with a height of more than 200 feet is usually seen by people, but this height does not include the height of the blade. The height of the wind turbine blades can easily add another 100 feet to the total height of the wind turbine based on the tower. There is a ladder on the tower for maintenance personnel to enter the top of the turbine and a high-voltage cable is installed and laid on the tower to transmit the electricity generated by the generator on the top of the turbine to its base.
2. Engine Compartment

3. Blade/ Rotor

4. Anemometer and Wind Vane
Other external components of wind turbines include anemometers and wind vanes, which are not be found easily on commercial wind turbines from a distance, because they are relatively small in size compared to the turbines.
Anemometers and wind vanes are usually installed at the rear of the nacelle to measure the current wind speed and direction. This data can then be transfered to the internal control system of wind turbine, which can adjust the yaw angle of the turbine and the pitch of the blades in order to maximize its efficiency.
